DRIED MILK

The new industry which is being started at Makino, Feilding, by Messrs Nathan and Co. will not only prove a boon to all householders, but will be an additional source of profit to our dairy farmers. That milk is one of the most active agents in spreading disease has been proved beyond a doubt, and any discovery that will counteract this evil is of special interest to the community. The new process, which involves the milk undergoing a very high temperature, has stood the test of a series of experiments in Carnegie s laboratory in New York, the result proving that the powder was absolutely sterile, and physiologically better as an infant food than the ordinary and toooften stale or tainted milk. Turing last summer, which was a very hot one in New York, an experiment was made in that city as to the suitability of dried milk as a food for babies and very young infants. The experiment was conducted by independent medical authorities, under the auspices of thb officers of the Department of Health. From the poorer tenement houses of New York 850 babies fior six months were fed solely on milk powder, with the result that not one died; and, with the exception of one, all throve marvellously, gaining from l-l,oz to 6oz per week. The one exception, although he did not do as well for the first few weeks, soon changed, and re-estab-lished his average. Both tubercular and anthrax germs have been cultivated and repeatedly put in the milk before the process, always with the same result, proving that-the powder is sterile. For domestic purposes dried mills will appeal to every housekeeper, for they will especially appreciate the benefit of having a permanent supply of fresh new milk nourishing, sweet, clean, and germ proof. In the near future people will buy their milk by the pound from the grocer, and with the aid of hot water reconvert the amount of milk required for immediate user
