CHRISTCHURCH, May 4. At the meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association, a letter was read from the secretary of the' Wellington Racing Club, stating that the Club adhered to itsj previous decision not to allow pony gallops at trotting meetings held in its district. RULES OF RACING. MASTERTON, May 8. At a meeting of the stewards of the Masterton Racing dub on Saturday it was resolved to recommend the Racing Conference that subsection 8 of rule 143 of the Rules of Racing be altered, so -that provision should be made that no apprentice shall ride in any race until he has served one year of his apprenticeship, and'until he has obtained a license • by application to a jockey club, in compliance with form No. 3 of rule 143, sec- ■ tion 16. It- was also decided to recommend that the rules relating to the totalisator should he amended by allow- " ing dividends to be paid out ten minutes after the finish of a race, and that protests should be.lodged within ten minutes after a race. THT WANGANUI AND AUCKLAND WEIGHTS. Hr Etitt was up to time with the weights for the Wanganui and Auckland winter meetings. The weight adjuster in a number of cases had the same horses . to deal with at both places. In the Century Hurdles, two miles and a dis- : tance, at. Wanganui, and the Grand National Hurdles, two miles and a quarter* at Auckland, Waiwera again heads the list. He failed to get placed in : either event last season, and after finishing out of a place with 11.7 at the Hutt, . went on to Chrischnrch, and won in record time. Among those that finished behind him were Battleaxe and (Slow Tom, winners at Auckland and the Hutt respectively. Waiwera is best suited by firm going, and when the ground is favourable may always be labelled dangerous over a journey. Spalpeen, who is placed within lib and 21b respectively of the Taranaki horse, has quickly come - to the front as a hurdler, A year ago he got within 51b of the minimum weight, but was not paid up for. He . came out in the maiden class at the same meeting, and after acting as run- * ner-up to Up-to-Date at a mile and threequarters, put down Record Reign’s halfbrother at a difference of a stone over the same distance. Both are promising - young horses, and likely to improve. At ft. Ellerslie in the spring, Spalpeen won a double on the second occasion, carrying 11.5 and running two miles in 3mm 52 sec. At the summer meeting he carried 11.11, and scored in 3min 47sec, which time equalled that put up by v\ aiwera at Riccarton. In this race Waiwera had - 12.7, and fell, Up-to-Date (10.9) being tor fourth.. The next day, Spalpeen carried 12.6, and ran. a mile and three-quarters in 3mih 20sec—a great performance for * four-year-old. On the third day Up-

to-Date carried 10.2 in the New Year Hurdles, two miles, in 3min Msec. In the autumn, Mr Evitt placed two stone between Spalpeen and Up-to-Date over two miles. Spalpeen did not start, and Up-to-Date won in 3minslsec. Under 11.11, Up-to-Date scored in the St. Helier’s Hurdle Race, two miles, in 3min 48sec. Now the difference between the pair is 6lbs. The top weight will require to be in lids best form to be upsides with the Auckland pair, who are more used to racing lefthanded than the Gipsy King gelding. Cannongate was engaged in both, hurdle races last year, but did not v start m, either. He was second to Up-to-Date at a difference of 121 bin the Brighton Hurdle Race. They did not meet on the second day when Cannongate won with 11.12, over a. mile and three-quarters. In the St. Helier’s Hurdle Race Cannongate failed to give Up-to-Date 101 b, and now meets the latter on 9lb better tenns. Haydn competed at Wanganui last year, but did not display his best form there. At Auckland he just missed the double. In the-Hurdles with 10.11 he acted as rumaer-up to Battleaxe in slow time, and was the only one to make any impression on Slow Tom at the Hutt. the going at either place is heavy.' me latter would be a difficult horse to beat. Merry Boy and Otairi, winner and run-ner-up in the Century Hurdles last year have nothing to complain of on the score of weight. ' Tupara’s. recent form has .not been good to recommend him as a Grand National winner, in the hands of such an experienced mentor of jumpers as P. Johnston, the brother to Battleaxe may improve. Ut the others-. Killarney is entitled to respect. The winner may come from Slow Tom, Killarney and Otairi. Spalpeen, Up-to-Date and Haydn will be hard to beat m the Great. Northern. Of the steeplechasers likely to be seen out this season Cannongate and Haydn are in a class by thea’selves The former has lib more at Wanganui than fie received last year. He did not compere then, but ran a good second to Haydn in the Great Northern at when conceding the Sou’-wester gelding 131 b. Now there is 31b between the pair. In the Auckland summer steeplechase Haydn (12.3) finished behind Princess of Thule (10.6) and Pipi (10.2). Haydn now meets Princess of Thule on slb better terms. Pipi is not engaged in the Ellerslie race, but appeal's well in the big race at Wanganui with 10.12, and should get expenses out of the Grandstand Steeplechase on the first day if he makes the trip from Dunedin. Ito knows the course, having run second in the same race to Scallywag last year. -Mr Evitt has taken no liberties with Spalpeen (11), or Slow Tom (10.10). Nor’-west, Dingo and Stray bird know the country 'well, but the best of them has probably been seen. W'aiwera’s stable mate Pharos has a good private reputation. Of the bottom weights Kanaka may prove the best. The winner may come from Cannongate, Haydn and Princess, of Thule. Pipi will be a hard horse to heat at Wanganui. The Voltigeur gelding Hutana may beat all the others. Acceptances for both meetings are due on the 13th inst.
