BALLANCE.

(From Our* Own Correspondent.; Winter approaches—in fact has' already commented, and still the weather, is exceedingly vniM. This is rather fortunate for the road leading from here to Woodville-' Had the season been as wet as usual this road would have been almost impassable now. Etven with a few. days’ rain the papa which has been worked up almost knee deep in dust during the sumv mer mmths becomes quite a mire. The road is only just formed and in places where the "table” has been worn down or takes a slope inwards instead of outwards the water lodges on the hill side and makes a bog. This, of course, is increased by the regular weekly traffic of grocers, butchers, bakers and mailman. With an extended period of rain this traffic would undoubtedly be stopped. Consequently there is great need of a coat of metal. Even ft first coat * would tide over the winter. In summer the road is good, and leading as it does through a fine piece of natural bush forms a very pleasant drive. , Last week Mr Robinson’s mare Lucy took a turn round the paddocks, and after careering for some time brought up midway through the fence with only a portion of the trap behind her. One wheel was completely \ knocked off by the stumps, and every spoke torn outi Mr J. Ealloon has recently imported into the district two fine Clydesdale stal-

lions from. Taranaki. . “Last Monday the householders met in '. the Public School to elect the School Committee for the ensuing year, with the result that the following were elected: Messrs J. Sinclair (chairman), J. Tait (seeretarv), C. Robinson, G. Tork, A. >. Wo-ds, Heard, and W. Turner. We have had a visit once more by the fraudulent canvasser, who damages, this kind of business in out of the way places. This time the amount for the vended article is not much, a matter of 2s for a bottle* ,of cloth cleaner, but why these people cannot be honest and trade squarely is rather strange; 1 Most people can easily see that the half dozen nice after--ncm tea cups to be given to each customer “in a few days" are but an “airy nothing." , . ; ■ , It is a pity something cannot be done to prevent the larrikinism that goes on at the Church on Sunday evenings. We evidently require more police protection here. Mr O'Meara, M.H.R., has received word from the Postmaster-General that arrangements are being made to carry out the wishes of the settlers with regards to the establishment of a Money Order Office and Post Office Savings Bank here.
