LOCAL AND GENERAL

Lord Ranfurly will • pay a farewell visit to Gisborne on June 4th.

It is very improbable that the proposed conference of representatives of the agricultural .associations will be held this year after all. A circular was sent out by Mr M. Murphy, of Canterbury, inviting expressions of opinion on the subject, but many associations did not reply at all, whilst several others who did ..seemed to- consider that there was no urgent need for a conference this year. Hence those who originated the proposal are not feeling very enthusiastic in the matter.

In reply to a letter from the secretary of the Wellington Industrial Association asking the Harbour Board for a twelve months’ extension, of tilie lease of land to the association for the purpose of an exhibition, the secretary of the Board said that such an extension—to Ist April, 1906 —would reach to an important date in tilie Board's affairs. The Hunter street property would then revert to the City Council, with its. revenue. About that time it would he necessary t-o re-raise the Board’s loans in London, and there were other objections to the proposal. On the motion of Mr H. Beauchamp, it was decided net to accede to the association’s request.

Mr Seddon, who is at present enjoying a tour of the Marlborough Sounds, celebrated oil Sunday the eleventh anniversary of his accession to the position of Prime Minister of New Zealand. The public will heartily, congratulate him on this “record reign,” regretting at. the same time the cause of his present relief from the work and worry of office. During this long term of Premiership, which has not been equalled, we believe, in any part of the world in recent years, Mr Seddon has only twice suffered from indisposition.
