WAIRARAPA P. AND A. SOCIETY

The annual meeting of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society was held on Saturday. There xvas an attendance of about forty members. The president, Mr G. Tully, in bis address, congratulated members on the financial position of the society. He stated that after spending £357 on permanent improvements, there remained ■a credit balance of £173. Mr Tully deplored that the Wairarapa farmers xvould not contribute £2OO per year towards the retention of a veterinary surgeon in this district, and said the farmers seemed to depend wholly upon the Government. It was a matter for congratulation, he remarked, that the dairy industry of the colony xvas growing largei an*d larger, and xvool had gone up 50 pet cent, in price. There xvas no doubt/ said Mr Tully, xvlien referring .to the dairy industry, that farmers xvould suffer no loss through again securing the services of Mr Kinsella as Dairy Commissioner. With reference to the shortage of sheep, the speaker did not agree xvitih Mr Wheeler, of Marlborough, that the remedy lay in prohibiting the export of ewe lambs from the colony. If that xvere done, the emaf.ll farmers, xvitlx from one hundred to a thousand sheep, xvould suffer. Government interference jn the matter xvas unnecessary, as xvhen the sheep-oxvner found lie could get a bigger price for his live ewes than for frozen ones, he would not export. He moved the adoption of the report. The motion xvas seconded by Mr N. Grace. Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.11.R., snowed that during the past yeans the society had .steadily improved its position. He thought the meeting should express ita disapproval of the manner in xvhicli the Government had neglected to erect sterilising xvorks at the Bluff and at Auckland. The Minister for Lands’ had stated that Cabinet, had declined to grant the necessary sunn (£5000) towards the erection of the works. The speaker understood that machinery had been sent for, but nobody knew xvhen it would be used. The report was adopted. It was decided to hold next spring sflioxv on October 26th and 27th.
