Blanch (partnership in dog Storeman). Mr G. Leslie’s Romp whelped on January 22hd, 1904, to Able Garner, 8 dogs and 3 bitches; registered April 25th, 1904/ r " OAMARU COURSING CLUB. GRAND CHALLENGE STAKES MEETING. . ■ The Oamaru Club’s season of 1904 was opened on the 28th" ult., when the Grand Challenge Stake of <£22o was set down for decision. The weather was beautifully fine, although a chilly wind swept the .ground during the afternoon. The attendance of the public was very good dur-. ii*g the three days’ coursing. In fact it was a record meeting for the Club both in attendance and: the manner m which the meeting was conducted. The stake had drawn entries from all parts of the colony, from Auckand to the Bluff, and also froan Victoria. That veteran courser of Victoria. Mr P. F. Kelly, had crossed the Tasman Sea to compete for the rich stake offered by the Club, and much interest was naturally attached to the running of The Hermit, by Goldsmith— Polonaise, who was competing in the Stake. The coursing on the whole was Very good, a large majority of the hares finding their way to the escapes. Mr L. Rutledge, of Dunedin, who officiated as judge from the elevated stand gave universal satisfaction, and with the exception of the course between Earl Roberts and Merry Boy in the first round, his decisions were met.with approval by the spectators. In the course between The Hermit and Separation in the second) round the judge raised the flag for The Hermit, but he eyideutly had made a mistake in the collars, and after a moment’s consideration he' altered the flag and raised the flag for Mr Wise’s Separation.

who undoubtedly gave The ■Hermit a good beating, both leading him up to the gam© and outworking him. The alteration in the flags was received by a round of applause by the public, although The Hermit was' a sound favourite for the course. The slippers, Messrs Dalgleisli and: Connoly, performed their duties very satisfactorily, and in no case was tlieir a bad slip. I heard complaints on the ground about th.e length of the slips, but each pair of dogs were given the same slip and their could be no cause for dissatisfaction. The mortality bill was not so. bad for the meeting. On the first day there were 17 kills out of' 45 courses; second -day, 11 kills out of 35 courses; and on the last day 3 kills out of 13 courses. The winner turned uip in Messrs Annan d and Baker’s r dbg Clements, by Lord Roberts—Clementina, who ran. through the stake with plenty of dash, and fire. He ran his fir9t. course very slovenly, and that accounts for the price he wag at in the betting, but each course he ran better than the proceeding one, and at the finish was going like a. machine. He had the misfortune to knock off two toe nails on the last day, and through this mishap it is very unlikely he will race again this season. Clements was splendidly handled by Mr Walter Glews, who is a nephew of the late respected and veteran courser of Victoria. Mr Walter Melrose. The runner-up Merry Boy, by Erebus —May Queen, is owned by Messrs Pollock and Mitchell of Dunedin, and is: a litter brother to Better. Days, who won the Challenge Stakes last year. Among the visitors at the meeting I noticed Mr P. I . Kelly (Victoria), Mr Ted Bepple (New South Wales). Mr R. Wright (Sydney), Mr J. Lopdell (Hawke’s Bay), Mr Martin Taylor (Auckland), Mr H. w. Davies (kon. sec. N.Z.C.A.), Mr H. J. Pick (sec. Leeston C.C), Mr E Bull (Iron sec. Rangitata C.C.), Mr Walter Glows (Hastings), and several of hei well-known followers of the leash.

Mt G. F. Wise made an energetic and attentive hon. secretary, and the Committee, amongst whom were Mr O. R. Wise, Mr R- O. Campbell, and Mr J. Cameron (President), did all in their power to enberta h the visitors and make the meeting an enjoyable one, and the verdict trom all quarters was that they had succeeded in their object. The following are the details of" the meeting, from the “North. Otago Time®”: —•
