This year is a close season for native pigeon®, pukeko and kaka. The season for shooting other native game and imported game in the Wellington district will open on May Ist and close on July 31st, The Wairarapa County Council has further considered a proposal, writes our correspondent, to procure road machinery at a cost of £IO4O. It has been decided to raise £3OO by increasing the general rate from 1 7-16 d to 1 9-16 d in the £1 as an instalment of the amount required, but to take no further steps till information is obtained respecting the Hutt County Council plant. On Monday Messrs D . Ouddie, Acting Dairy Commissioner, and W. M. Singleton, Dairy Instructor, inspected the refrigerating plant at the Dalefield Dairy Factory. Mr Ouddie considers that the new system of curing the cheese will show best results in New Zealand in the summer. Messrs Ouddie and Singleton returned to town last evening. The annual generail meeting of the council of the Wellington District Law Society was held on Monday at the Supreme Court library Mr O. B. Morison, the vice-president, took the chair in the absence from the city of the president. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr (J. B. Morison; vice-president, Mr M. Myers; treasurer, Mr Henry Haiti.; council, Messrs A. de B. Brandon, M. Chapman, J. J. Devine (re-elected), O. P. Skerrett (re-elected), and H. F. Yon naast; Wanganui member of council, Mr W. H. Barnicoat; auditor, Mr P. Levi (re-elected). Messrs F. H. D. Bell and T. F. Martin were re-elect-ed to represent Wellington on the Council of Law Reporting, and Mr F. H. D. Bell (re-elected) and Mr O. B. Morison were appointed to be the Wellington members on the council of the New Zealand Law Society. A passenger sends ms the following account of an act of conspicuous bravely performed by Mr Cameron, third officer o-f the steamer Mapourika, last Saturday in Westport. The Mapourika was coaling alongside the Westport shutes, when the Rubi Seddon, with a good way on, passed her on the outside, causing the Mapourika to roll heavily. A young lady—a resident of Greymouth —happened to he on the gangway at the-time, going on to the Mapourika,, while her aged mother was just stepping on to it. The gangway swung loose off the shore end, and the young lady was precipitated into the water. Mr Cameron, attracted by the screams of the old lady, hastened from his cabin, passed several men who were standing by, and jumped into the water —cap and all —and brought out the (young lady, who had gone under twice. • Both were hauled up a ladder hastily flowered. Mr Cameron came within a 'couple of inches of being dashed into insensibility himself when jumping in.
