Mr H. L. Allen, who has jutet been awarded by the New South Wales University Senate the Jam-ete King, of Irrawang, travelling scholarship of £l3O a year, tenable for two years, is a graduate of Sydney University. At Newington College he twice gained the Wig'ram Allen scholarship for classics, and completed his course there by winning t-lie Schofield scholarship, and becoming dux of the school. In the senior University examination of 1899 he won the Cooper scholarship for classics, and the English medal. His record at the University was a brilliant one. Mr Allen intends proceeding shortly to- Germany to sfcpdy at the University of Leipsic. A capital pen and ink sketch from life of a Maori boy’s head has been executed by Mr J. McDonald, of the Tourist Department’s staff. It has been presented by the artist to the department, and will no doubt soon adorn the walls of the art bureau.
