SHIRE HORSE SALES AT HOME

The spring horse sales opened well with the disposal of the sbiresi bred by the late Sir J. B. Maple at Childwiclt, St Albans. The horses sold comprised the bulk of the stud, the total realised being <£7297 10s, which figure comes out at an average of £145 19s for the fifty sold, and this result must be considered a satisfactory one. Top price was made for the brood mare, Queen of the Shires, for which 460 guineas- Avas given by the Hon. Louis Greville, the same buyer paying 300 guineas for Dunsmore Gloaming- Air Leopold Slalom on paid 420 guineas for the fonr-year-old mare, Childwick Youno, and B'iythwood Laurel changed hands at 310 guineas, going to Mr Hudson. The tivo-year-old fillies sold best of the young stock, the average for five being over £l3O. Of the stallions, Childivick Majestic made 400 guineas, being purchased by Mr ,Taggard, while 370 guineas Avas given by Mr Bridgers for ChildAvick Harold, and 360 guineas by Messrs Thompson for Old Times VI. Another important sale of Shire horses, the property of Sir P. Albert Alnntz, M.P., Avas held by Messrs Sexton, GrimAvade, and Beck, at Dunsmore, Rugby. High prices were realised for the more celebrated prize-winners, but the competition for some of the others Avas rather slow. The average for 57 animals Avas £llß 8s Bd, the total of the sale £6750. The very promising yearling filly, Dunsmore Nightingale, was purchased for His Majesty the liing for 300 guineas. The three-year-old filly, Danesfield Belladonna, junior champion at the London ShoAV last year, was bought by Air Smith Carrington for 650 guineas, and the same purchaser secured the brood mare, Queeris Favour, for 320 guineas. Hon. L. Greville gave 160 guineas for the three-year-old filly, Dunsmore Combined. The tivo-year-old .filly, Dunsmore Cui Bono 11.. went to Mr Michaelis at 250 guineas, aaid Sir Alexander Henderson gave 270 guineas for the two-year-old filly, Royal Heiress.
