MAURICEVILLE

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

For the past forty-eight hours we have had a drizzling rain, along with a cold southerly wind, the weather being quite wintry. Firewood of any kind is getting scarce, even with us in the bush, and the Jime-burners have to purchase their requirements chiefly from Hukanui. Gawain, owned by Mr J. Chisholm, of Mauriceville. won the Rewa Handicap at the Feilding meeting, being cleverly ridden bv Oliver, and paying a dividend of £l2 9s.

Mr Henderson, the contractor for the new road to Mauriceville West, expects to finish the ivork in about three weeks. The contract has been more, difficult than was expected, and the weather has prevented the men putting in full -time. Rongomai tried conclusions nltthe targets with Mauriceville on Good' Friday, the home team suffering defpqt by 4ti points. Burton, of the visiting team, and Rummer, of Mauriceville, were the highest scorers.

Mr Peterson, a local dairy farmer, has bought a section of land at Newman, and will take possession next month. Mr C. Smith’s buggy horse had a narrow escape of being killed by the 4.30 pan. train oil Tuesday last. The horse jumped over the fence on to the railway line and galloped before the engine for a good distance. The animal succeeded in getting into the main road by leaping the cattle stops, otherwise the consequences would have been fatal/ April 7th. /A/
