DANNEVIRKE

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

It. is safe to assert that no other district in the colony has made such rapid progress during the past couple of years as this. Dannevirko is now recognised as one of the busiest little towns in New Zealand and the hub of Hawke’s Bay.

The great development of the sawmill-

iug industry, of course is responsible for this progress. Tillere are innumerable mills situated! all over the district which afford employment to a very large number, and therefore it can be imagined tliqt at times a big sum of money is distributed: locally. On© striking illustration of the town’s go-aheadness is shown by the fact that within the past few months several leading commercial firms •- have started branches of their business' here. The New Zealand Loan Company have just had erected brick premises in Ward street; Messrs Barraud and Abraham intend erecting a handsome

structure, whilst in addition to the local stock firms, Messrs Abraham and Williams, and Williams and Kettle', hold sales here. Another proof of the confidence put in its future career' is shown by the fact that shrewd! tradesmen have, spent several -thousands of pounds in the election of substantial business premises. There is a bright future before tho district despite the crc a kings of some who assert that "the bottom” will fall! out of the place when the milling industry is done.

Slowly but surely the dairying industry is gaining ground, especially since Messrs Beattie, Lang and Co. have established factories apd creameries*’in the surrounding district. At Umutaoroa and Norsewood there are profitable dairy concerns. With the further settlement and' the outting up of the Tam ah i block many fain.ilies and 'others will engage in the industry.

The hospital fund, with Government subsidy, now stands at over ,£2OOO. The scheme is well advanced, and it should not be longberore the institution is erected in our midst.

Mr F. Quintrell, one time a Wesleyan minister at Palmerston North but who of recent years has been farming' at Ormondville, was presented! with a. purse of sovereigns before departing for Nelson district lately, where he has taken charge of a parish. Mr Quin tress now belongs to the Anglican Church. There was a cluster of nmr'riages during the Easter holidays, and amongst the couples who faced the bridal altar were Mr J. Dunstale, of Dannevirke, and 1 Miss Wishopski, of Halcombe; Mr Tonks and Miss Taylor; Mr G. Bowen and Miss Brioksen; Mr Sarney and Miss Woods; and Mr Evans to Miss Began. The Wesleyan and Catholic bodies recently organised bazaars and obtained' a good sum aa the resuilt. Wellingtonians - will be interested to hear that prominent amongst the latter sect was the McKeever family. Mrs and Miss McKeever. are active churohworkers. Mrs Whelan, of Umutaoroa, Miss Cock, and Miss Neagle; also the Sisters of the Napier and Masterton Convents; • Mr George Potts, and Father : McKenna were amongst thie energetic hand! of workers. A big- "batch of licensing cases was taken on Friday. Mr Brabant the-new gM. took his seat for the first time. The charge against C. Melville, of Mangatera, was dismissed. In the Kenzil case judgment was reserved. Albert Paw-son and W. White and Constable Butler gave evidence. Mr PoWnali appeared tor Bonzil. ■
