A FEDERAL BY-ELECTION.
DEFEAT OF SIR MALCOLM
McEACHARN,
MELBOURNE

Tho election c-f a member for Melbourne in the federal House of Representatives, Sir Malcolm MeEacharn having been recently declared unseated, took place yesterday. Sir Malcolm McEiacharn, who was again a candidate, was opposed bv Dr Maloney. The election resulted in the return of Dr Malonov by a majoritv or 359 votes.
At one stage of tho polling ho had a lead of over 1200 votes, "but*'tho postal vote reduced his majority considerably. Dr Maloney’s election is a blow to the federal Ministry. It makes partial in the House :—Ministerialists.* 25; Opposition, 27; Labour, 23. In returning thanks, Dr Maloney declared. that the platform of the labour party was the foundation of a higher civilisation; and. with the help of God. tho party would create it. The result of the • election was ,a warning to Mr Balfour a.s to the attitude of the Australians concerning the introduction of Chinese into the Transvaal.
Dr Maloney was very excited, and rushed about embracing and kissing male electors. He received a very strong woman’s vote.
