The “National Review” for February maintains an enthusiastic interest in the advocacy of the institution of a preferential tariff and various, able and convincing are the aspects under which the pleas are put forth. We have “a national tariff for national defence,” by Mr H. W. Wilson; and certainly the •most strikingly .conclusive article we have been on the subject, by Mr R. IT. Inglis Palgrave, F.R.S., entitled •■Colonial Friends and Foreign Rivals.” By carefully prepared tables the writer prepares the mind of the reader for the only reasonable deductions. Other articles are contributed by Austin Dobson. Maurice Low, Arnold White and Mrs Earle, author of “Pot Pound.” Her article on “Doctors” is clever and interesting.

The “Pall Mall Magazine” for March has already arrived. It is artistically illustrated, finely printed, and its articles and short, stories are by the- first writers of the day. Mr Harold Begbie’s “Master Worker” this month is the Rev. li. J. Campbell, M.A., of the City _ Temple, London. The interview with this preacher presents him as a youthful authoritative iand egotistical person. It is not. surprising that some of Ins conclusions should be somewhat astounding. The “Pall Mall” is one cf the best family magazines published.
