Before proceeding with the business of the annual general meeting of the Wellington rvrd Manawatu Railway Company yesterday, the chairman, Mr John Kirkcaldie. made reference to the loss the company had suffered through the tragic death in April last of its solicitor, Mr W. T. L. Travers. ‘Tt was Mr Travers,” saiH the chairman, ‘-'who in 1880 oonvened the first public meeting of the citizrevis of Wellington for the purpose of ivonsidering what step© could he taken to promote the construction of the West Coast railway. Mr Travers was one of our provincial directors, and was appointed solicitor to the oo'i’-jpjiy in February, 1881; a position which, he held until the time of his death. I am sure shareholders will join with the board in extending their sympathies to the relatives of the do* ceased gentleman.” "
