A HAWKE’S BAY SENSATION.
A SETTLER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER.
NAPIER, April 4
A man named George England,a small farmer at Maharahara, was arrested on Friday morning, and brought before tho Court at Wocidrills on Saturday, charged with attempted double murder. It appears that England, vho u cut to Woodville on Thursday, learned, on returning late that evening, that his wife and a hired man named Thomas Nicholas had gone to some entertainment. They returned between 12 and 1 o’clock, and on their arrival England attempted to strike his wife. Nicholas interfered and held him down, while Mrs England g:<t away and went to the house of a neighbour. Nicholas himself left the house shortly after, whereupon England rushed for a gun, and fired at his wife, and at Nicholas, one of the shots striking the woman, in the* leg. Accused liars been remanded until next'Friday.
