NIAGARA AT ST. LOUIS
An immense artificial cascade has been determined upon by the authorities of the Louisiana Purchase Exposi-
tiou of 1904 as the centrepiece of the j semicircular lay-out of the principal if buildings. The cascade will be divided i into three parts; a large middle cas-
cade, with a smaller one at each side, will be installed, the water flowing directly into the head of the grand basin. In all, about 90,000 gallons of water
per minute will be supplied at a head t>f 159 ft, forming tne greatest artificial water effect ever attempted.
The water will be taken from the grand basin, and raised to the top of
the cascade by a pumping station locat-
«d under Festival Hall. The pumping machinery will consist of three 36in
single-stage Worthington turbine centrifugal pumps, each driven by a 2000horse power Westinghouse alternating current motor. Th« total horse-power utilised will thus be 0000, making this the largest electric pumping station in the world. The pumps and other pieces of machinery for this plant are now being installed at St. Louis.
It is a curious fact that the higher the civilisation of a race the slower the action of the senses. Actual experiments have shown that, whereas the ear of the white man responds to a sound in 147thousandtlis of a second, that of a negro responds in 130-thousandths, and that of a Red Indian in 116-thousandths.
