Hawera tradesmen (the local “Star” asserts) are being pinched by want of ready money. The newspaper adds that “storekeepers appear to be regarding the system of doing business on credit with practical disfavour. For a long time dissatisfaction - lias been expressed; anfl it is now reported that several firms have definitely decided to presently decline to give credit and to do business strictly on a cash basis.” The comparative monopoly which Wellington has over Government discount stamps suggests the thought that Hawera tradesmen could with advantage follow suit in purchasing them, and so encourage the sound cash system for which Wellington trading is noted.
Commercial men report that there is quite a slump in business in Wellington at present. January is usually a quiet month, but the reaction after a very busy 'Christmas is particularly noticeable this year. The head of one lairge wholesale house states that for the pastthree weeks half his present staff could easily have coped with the business done. By the beginning of next month, however, business is expected to have recovered. An excellent sign at present is that all oversea steamers are receiving full cargoes. The appointment of Mr R. W. Dyer as District Land Registrar at Invercargill and tjaht of Mr Williaiff Wyinka as District Land Registrar in Otago>, ate gazetted. :
