GISBORNE, September 28. The police this afternoon took out a warrant for the arrest of Matenga Kaipau, alleged to be a tabling a, upon a charge of murdering Chieftain Heta Te Kami, whose death occurred last week. It is alleged that accused threw buckets of cold water over deceased—a consumptive —thereby hastening his end. WAN GAN UI, Sept-em her 28. A big fire occurred in Wanganui tonight, whey, the extensive buildings of the Sash and Door Company were totally destroyed. A large quantity of stacked timber was also burned. The plant, which was one of the most up-to-date in the colony, is completely destroyed. Some one hundred men and boys will be temporarily thrown out of work, while the local building trade will also be temporarily dislocated. The ani-ount of damage, insurances, etc., cannot be ascertained to-night. CHRISTCHURCH, September 28.
The contents of Mr W. H. P. Woodroffe 5 s house were destroyed by fire yesterday. They were insured, for Ji 2ooo in the London and Lancashire office. The building, which was the property of the Hon H. Wigraan (Mayor) was insured in the same office for .£9OO.
Special to the “Mail.” OTAKI, September 28. On Saturday a little girl was induced by a young man to accompany him to a place, where he committed an assault. The child was also cruelly beaten, her body being covered with bruises. A man named James Gylford, who has only been' in the district a few weeks, wa.s arrested on Saturday night. He boarded the evening up-train, but was detected just as the train moved away. The guard stopped the train, and Gylford made away, with a large number of people, including police, in pursuit. After an exciting chase the man was caught. He was brought before a local Justice this morning and adjourned till the 6th inst.
