SAVED FROM THE SEA.
-SALVAGE WORK BY THE ZEALANDIA.
SYDNEY, September 25. At six o’clock this morning the crow of the steamer Zealandia, which sailed late last night for Auckland, sighted the American four-masted barquentine Aurora flying signals of distress. The Zealandia bore down on the vessel. which was boarded by the chief officer of the steamer. He found that the vessel was bound from Tasmania to Adelaide with over a million feet of lumber. She bad been lying helpless for fourteen days, having lost her rudder. The provisions were running short, and only three days’ supply of water was left.
At considerable risk, owing to a heavy swell, the crew of the Zealandia passed a hawser, aboard the Aurora within half an hour, and the steamer was headed back for Sydney. She reached the Heads at dusk, and the master of Zealandia having handed the barquentine over to a tug resumed the voyage to Auckland.
