TAXATION IN FIJI

STATEMENT BY MR CHAMBERLAIN

LONDON, May 6. Speaking in the House of Commons, in reply to a quest-ion by Mr J. Cathcarfc Wason, Independent Liberal member for Cvkney and Shetland (and formerly a n ember of the New Zealand Hoarse of Representatives), Mr Chamberlain said that upon learning hereafter the views of the Governor of Fiji (Sir H. M. Jackson) he would consider if an 'alteration in taxation was advisable.

It would be unprecedented and inconvenient, Mr Chamberlain said, to ask Mr Seddon, Premier of New Zealand, for a report oil native regulations promulgated in Fiji- The proper method for natives petitioning would bo through their Governor. Ordinance 20 of 1887, said the Minister, was still operative. As at present advised, he was of opinion that it was necessary to retain powers of deportation.
