Air A. E. Leatham, the English cricketer, who remained for a time in the colony +o obtain some deer-shooting, had first-class sport on the Hunter river, where he secured several good heads. Another Ehglish sportsman, Mr Charles C. Druce, has been having good sport in the Wairarapa. The death has occurred at Gisborne of Mr Alexander McLean, who Had lived there focr many years. Deceased was born in 1825 in the island of Coll, Argyllshire, ‘Scotland, and spent his early years in acquiring a knowledge of forestry. In 1852 he went to Victoria, where he resided till coming to this colony about nineteen years ago. Mr McLean took a keen interest in politics. In Victoria he took part in the administration of county affairs, but duxin his residence in New Zealand he did not identify himself with the local bodies. He was held in high regard for his probity and conscientiousness. He was appointed to the Commission of the Peace some years ago. The deceased’s two brothers in New Zealand were the late Mr Allan McLean, Tfakituki, Hawke’s Boy, and Mr Donald McLean, Ashburton. Ho leaves a widow, five sons and one daughter. Two of his sons are in Sydney, one fn Melbourne and the others in Poverty Bay.
