NAVAL EXPENDITURE
THE ITALIAN ESTIMATES
(Received May 7, 0.31 a.m,) ROME May 6. In tho course of a speech in the Chamber of Deputies, Signor Baccelli, Minister of Marine, said that Great Britain had not approached Italy in. favour of simultaneous reductions in naval expenditure. In the event of Britain proposing it, the Minister said, Italy would reduce her armaments. The proposal might seem inopportune, because other Powers were increasing their fleets, while Italy, for financial reasons, was reducing her Naval Estimates. Italy, continued. Signor Ba.ccelli, needed a powerful navy, owing to her position, and to the great interests she had to defend in distant parts, and also able to protect emigrants.
