PAINFUL SCENE IN A BOARD SCHOOL
A monstrous case of assault came before the Magistrate at Clerkenwell the other day. It appears that an indignant mother, whose darliug had been admonished—apparently without actual chastisement—for non-attendance at school, went into the classroom where her child was being taught, and violently assaulted the wrong teacher. It was not (says the “Standard”) until this terrible avenger had threatened to “shake the liver out of” the unfortu-
nate and unoffending schoolmistress, and had attacked her and knocked her over a desk, that the little girl called out, “It’s not her, mother.” Nor did this somewhat tardy interruption appear to terminate the proceedings. The defendant answered the battered teacher’s remonstrances by attempting to attack her again, and one can only wonder at the Magistrate’s leniency in letting the woman off with a fine. Teachers must be protected, or they will be unable to carry out their important functions in a satisfactory manner.
