COLOURED LABOUR
NEW ZEALAND AND THE MAIL SERVICES.
MELBOURNE, May 11.
It is rumoured in federal circles that .New Zealand is trying to benefit by the - Commonwealth, prohibiting the conveyance of mails in steamers by coloured labour. It is alleged that Mr Seddon has formulated a scheme whereby such steamers, instead of coming on to Melbourne and Sydney, after landing the mails at Adelaide, shall go direct to New Zealand.
Interviewed by a “ Times” reporter regarding the above statement, Mr Seddon said: “It is well known that under
the sunny skies of Australia people are •gifted with powerful imaginations. The nervous tension of our friends across the Tasman Sea must be highly strung, probably owing to the Victorian railway trouble. Considering that New Zealand was the first to close its doors against vessels doing the coastal trade when they are manned by coloured seamen, it is amusing for the Australians to appear to be afraid of New Zealand bringing the ships direct from Adelaide to. its own waters. The time' is not far distant, however, when New Zealand will he the terminus for the Messageries Maritimes, the Norddeutscher Lloydi,
the Orient, the P. and 0., and the Vancouver services.”
