The President of France is to visit England in July-
A number of New Zealanders appear among the successful competitors in the £SOO competitions of the Imperial Dry Plate Photograph Company. Over 7500 prints were sent in from all parts of the world. Mr G. E. Jones, of Auckland, and Mr J. N. Taylor, of Christchurch, took third place on the list. Other successful New Zealanders in order of merit were- —-Messrs T. D. Leedham and W. B. Sealy, of Auckland; Miss M. Billens; Messrs H. Davidson and T. Pringle, of 'Wellington; Messrs A. Jones and W. Stevenson, of Auckland ; and F. Whitaker. Nelson. The Hon W. Swanson, M.L.C., died on Thursday at Auckland. Mr Swanson a notable figure in Auckland for a long period. He held office on many* local bodies, and many years ago entered the House of Representatives for one of the city constituencies. After a considerable term of service as a member of the Lower House, he was defeated at the polls, and was then called to the Legislative Council, of which he was a member at the time of his death. Mr Swanson’s rugged honesty and shrewd common-sense gained him many friends, who will regret to learn of his death. He bad been in failing health of Into years*
