Vermont’s abandonment of prohibition after a trial of half a century is (says “ Public Opinion,” of New York) significant of a great change in public sentiment. Fifty years ago prohibition was very popular in the East. A few years later it gained considerable strength in the West, but now the only imiportanb communities east or west which retain their prohibitory laws are New Hampshire and Maine, Kansas and North Dakota, and even in these States it is not pretended that the laws are enforced*
