RACING IN N EW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON AUTUMN MEETING. There Avas a largo attendance at theIlutt Park racecourse on Thursday, Die autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opening under favourable Avea-t-her conditions. Among the visitors to the course were the Premier, Sir Joseph Ward, Sir George Clifford, Messrs G. G. Stead, of Christchurch, and J. B. Reid, of Eilerslie. The public Ava-s greatly disappointed at the non-appearance of the champion Achillea in the North Island Challenge Stakes. The colt suffered a slight injury to one of his hocks a feAV day s ago. His withdrawal made the event practically a walk-over for Treadmill, the best two-year-old of the year. His solitary opponent (Red Gauntlet) Avas unable to extend him. A couple of accidents happened during the running of two of the events. In the Hurdles Aide-de-Camp came to grief at the first fence and broke one of his legs. He was destroyed shortly afterwards. In the Tinakori Hack Handicap tho riders of Catherine Gordon and Royal Blue gpt knocked out of their saddles shortly after the start. H. Donovan escaped v/itii a shaking. A Watson (Royal Blue’s rider) suffered a slight concussion of the brain. The big race proved a runaway victory for Shrapnel, who showed good form at the Feilding meeting recently. Shraipnel, who put up a time record for the race, is owned in Wanganui. He was ridden by his trainer, W. Raynor. Scylla ran really well for about seven furlongs. Pallas shaped disappoint in gly. Lavalette, who received most support for the Silversbream Hack Handicap, ■QQuld iset no nearer than fifth. .Wand

had the race won at the turn, but had to be ridden at tho finish to stall off a late run by Hydrant. Wind put up a penalty in. tho Tinakori Hack Handicap later in tho afternoon, and beat fifteen opponents in good style. The So-u’-wester gelding, owned by a local sportsman who adopts the nom de course of “W. Blackmore,” is trained by W. Davis at the Hutt. This was Ills first appearance in public since the Woo-d-------villo meeting in February, where he Avon two races. Mr ChadAvick’s handicaps pro a- id ed some interesting racing. The attendance Avas estimated at about 2500, including the Hon the Premier. The racing AA r as a great improvement- on the first day and a slashing finish was Avitnessed in the big race. In only three of the seven handicap events did the first- favourite get home. The Hutt Handicap proved the best of good things for Shrapnel. Porirua Avas a great favourite for the St..Leger Stakes, but he aa"us easily beaten by 7 Kelburn, owned by the Canterbury sportsman, Mr H. Friedlander, who was not present at the meeting. Eight of the nine runners for the Muritai Hack Handicap • were Avell hacked. Betsy, well handled by G. Price, won nicely from Capulet. Hydrant put in a, late run, and might have troubled tlie Avinner had he appeared on the scene earlier. General Symons was withdrawn, from the Autumn Handicap, the stable relying on Scylla. Motor

Caunie Chiel s success was received with cheers. Fellman won the Hurdle Race all the way. Three of the seven runners for the Pacific Handicap represented the Porirua stable. Exmoor led all the way, Sea Lion and Waitarere' being the laM to finish. Ixia carried nearly a stone over-weight in the Belmont Hack Handicap. Ridden by C. Jenkins, he Avon all the way. The previous day Ixia was not in the first nine in the mile hack race. Mr F. Barry purchased Ixia from Mr Dillon for £IOO, and he ran in his new owner’s interest in the race ho won. The three light-weights filled the places in the Suburban Hanclicao. Pure Silver ran consistently, but "Tikirawa showed bettor form than in the Waiwetu Handicap the previous day, in which Pure Silver finished second. Air Masters was not satisfied with Tikirawa’s running in the Waiwetu Handicap, and asked the stewards to consider tho manner in which the gelding was ridden by U. Carmont in the race lie won. During the afternoon the sum of £12,282 was passed through the totalisator, making £22,557 for the meeting. This amount was £2IOO more than the corresponding clay last year.
