The Public Works Department will commence as soon as possible the survey of the Gatlin’s river railway extension. Last month men were engaged on the work, and authority has been given for the employment of an additional gang. The Minister for Public Works hopes to visit the line in* a couple months. The Education Department received a plea from the Marlborough Education Board for a larger share of the building grant; but the reply of the Minister is unfavourable. He states that while the grant for Marlborough would amount to only £7OO if the computation were made on the basis of population, or to £725 if the estimated value of tha school buildings were taken as the basis, the Board received last year £925; and the grant for this year, tie adds, will probably he as large-
