The profit and loss account of the Levin Co-operative Dairy Company for the year ending the 31st of July shows a balance to credit of £940. The directors propose to pay a dividend of G per cent, to shareholders; a bonus of a half-penny per lb on butter-fat supplied by shareholders; a bonus of 5 per cent, on wages to employees; the balance to be written off machinery and plant, making a total writing-off of nfcrly £IOOO during the last two years. Last year the balance to profit -and loss was £llBO 5s Id, of which £4GB 11s 9d was expended in dividend and bonus payments and £7ll 13s 4d written off machinery and plant. During, the year just ended tho company manufactured 155 tons of butter, the London sales producing a return of £9076 13s lOd and local sales £5298. The amount paid to milk-suppliers during the year—at an all-round price of 9d per lb of butterfat—was £11,712 8s 2d. Salaries and wages absorbed £7lO 0s Gd, and general charges—boxes £220, maintenance £231 5s lOd, etc. —totalled £842 5s lOd. A return was presented to the House of Representatives on the 19th inst. relative to prosecutions instituted in Hawke’s Bay since the amendment of the Rabbit Nuisance Act came into force in 1901. The return showed that in five cases brought against four defendants convictions were obtained and fines ranging from £1 to £5 were inflicted. Subsequently another case was brought against once of the oonvicted defendants, but this was dismissed, on the ground that the defendant (to quote the words of the return) “had taken reasonable steps to destroy the pest sinoe the first oonviction, although two of the Board’s inspectors and an expert rabbiter swore that-there was no improvement.’ 1
