Polo enthusiasts who journeyed to | Aliramar on Saturday afternoon to witness | the match Alanawatu v. Wellington were ! rewarded by a fine exhibition of the game. The early part of the afternoon was dull and threatening, but by the time the signal to commence play was ■ given, the rain clouds had passed away and a gentle, refreshing breeze prevailed, making the conditions all that could Iho desired. The teams were as follow: Alanawatu (white) —O. Robinson (back), ! A. Strang, captain (3), R. Abraham (2), 'H. Abraham (1). Wellington (red) —P. ! Baldwin (back), H. Johnston (3), C. J. ■ Crawford (2), C. P. Skerrett, captain (1). | Alessrs R. S. Abraham, (Manawatu) and | D. G. A. Cooper (Wellington) acted as 1 umpires, and Air Crawford as timekeeper. The contestants were responsible for good exhibitions of horsemanship, and of skill in the game. As was expected, Mana- , watu proved victorious by 7 goals to 4. With such redoubtable players as A. Strang and Robinson, ably assisted by two promising young players, R. and 11. Abraham, and all the visitors working well together under the direction of their captain, Wellington had a formidable team to meet. The play of tho home team was marked hv dash and determination, but it lacked the essential factor of combination. It would he difficult to individualise tlie players, for all worked hard. Johnston, who was always to the fore with tho attack, and who scored the four Wellington, goals, deserves credit for his efforts. Strang scored four goals for Alanawatu, R. Abraham two, anti H. Abraham one. The contest was witnessed with interest by a goodly number of people. During the afternoon a party of ladies dispensed tea, which was highly appreciated. A return match will be played at Aliramar to-day. Drags- will leavo the Government Buildings at 3.10 j p.m. for tho ground. Play will com- | menco at 4 o’clock.
