THE BOWLING TOURNAMENT

I?ine bright weather, with occasional wind were the conditions under the Northern Bowling AssociaSstoornament was resumed on the £. An interesting day’s play resulted. The final for the pairs between the WelSton and Invercargill representatives hn£ exciting contest. With the Sres at 19—23, Churchward and Geddk were lying 6 with a toucher m the ditch immediately behind the jack, Jhich was on the brink. The only chance for Invercargill was to make a burnt head of it. Smith, by a remarkable shot, drove Kitty to the verge of the boundary, where it struck Geddis s foot and became a dead-head. Invercargill thus wanted four to tie and five to win, but in the play off Geddis secured the coveted point, and the Wellington pair won, 19—24. A feature of the game was the fact that Wakeman and Hansom, the Pahiatua representatives, ran into the semi-finals. This was a very creditable performance, when it is remembered that the Pahiatua Club has only been in existence for two years. The bowling at Newtown was, on the whole, very good. The green was very keen. Beatson’s driving was particularly successful for Hastings in the last game against Thorndon, .for whom Rose give a fine exhibition of the drawing game. Number 6 rink was in bad order, the bowls often running away into another rink. One of the most interesting games on the Wellington rinks was the contest between, the redoubtable Victoria Club combination and the New Plymouth representatives; the result being that for the first, time during the present tournament, the local men went down. Gusty weather interfered with the bowlers last Wednesday, especially in the afternoon. Some very interesting play was witnessed nevertheless. Victoria has got a strong lead in the inter-club matches, and on performances and form must have a big say in the finals. The singles match Reich v. McLaren was one of the most exciting contests ever witnessed on a Wellington green. The players stuck together until the game stood fifteen all and one head to play. Reich then put three balls in front of the jack, making a complete cover, with the exception of one possible opening. McLaren decided to draw for the gap, and did so so accurately that his ball rested right on the jack. The enthusiasm of the onlookers was tremendous. The visitors are to be entertained at a smoke concert in the big marquee on the Wellington Club’s green to-morrow evening. An excellent programme has been arranged by Mr C. Hill, sen., and a pleasant evening may be anticipated. A charge is to be made to members of local clubs and non-bowlers, but visitors will be admitted free. Owing to the smoke concert taking place, it has been decided that entries for the commercial travellers’ trophy and the Hud-clart-Parker cup shall close at 7 o’clock to-morrow night, on the Wellington green, instead of at 9 o’clock, at the Albert Hotel. The secretary will, however, receive entries at any time from now. Mr C. Parata is arranging pairs matches for “unemployed” players, to take place on the Newtown green today, to start at 10 a.rn. Wind and rain stopped the bowlers from resuming their tournament on Thursday morning, but play was re-com-menced at 1 o’clock, and canned on until the shades of night put an end to the sport. The most exciting games during the afternoon were those between WeC lington and Newtown and Victoria and, Newmarket. In both cases the putative champions went down* The games were very close, and were witnessed by large numbers of spectators, who repeatedly applauded the efforts of the champions; in fact, the “barracking” was reminiscent of football rather than i bowls. The Bowling Tournament was resumed on Friday morning, notwithstanding that the rains of the previous way had made the greens rather soppy. Three rounds of the inter-club matches were played, several light showers of rain failing to damp tlie ardour of the bowlers, or drive them to the pavilion. The last heads were played in semi-darkness, and it was an amusing sight to see moot points being settled with tape measures by match-light. The game between Victoria and Napier in the fourteenth round was exciting throughout, and ended in a victory for the local men by one point, Evans, the Napier skip, just failing to take the jack with his last shot. The latter game was witnessed by about 150 spectators, and terminated at 8.40 p.m. (in the dark), amidst a scene of great excitement. The twenty-one heads resulted in a tie. The local men were then so anxious that their opponents should not have any advantage

that they would not even allow a match to be struck to enable the relative positions of the balls and the jack to be ascertained. The luck was with the Northerners, who won by Gve points.

The Northern Bowling Association’s | tournament was resumed in perfect ! \ weather on Saturday, when the greens j j were in the best order. The contest be- ' j tween Palmerston and Victoria for pre- j mier position created a great deal of excitement, and was watched with intense interest by a big crowd of spectators. Palmerston scored 7in the iirst head, Mowlem drawing two fine shots, and chipping Brackenridge off the jack : with a beautiful draw. Gooder scored | two for Victoria, and Mowlem again drew two for Palmerston. Palmerston, i 9; Victoria, 2. The third head added ! one to the score of each in both rinks. J Brackenridge the younger played a fine shot in the next head, and his j father drew another. Bunting scored ono for Palmerston, and the score stood—Palmerston, 11; Victoria, 5. Palmerston North’s leader put two on the “ kitty ” and the younger Brackenridge took one off. Nash put on another, which -the senior Brackenridge took out, and Palmerston scored one. j Before Bunting played in the other link Victoria was lying four, but Bunting drew the shot, which Gooder drove, and scored one. Victoria, 19; Palmerston, 14. In these two heads some capital play was shown. Victoria, in Good- , er’s rink, again put up two, and the senior Brackenridge, after having blocked the back hand for Palmerston, i drew round his own bowl, and running “kitty” six inches turned one into three by a brilliant shot, which was roundly applauded. Victoria. 24; Palmerston, 14. In the tenth head, Bunti ing put on another for Palmerston, and in Mowlem’s rink the Northern players . scored a couple. Palmerston, 17 ; Vic- j toria, 24. Mack was playing well for. Victoria, and his bowls were scoring i in the eleventh head when the skips went up. The position was not alter- j ed, although Bunting played two very j fine shots. A similar score was made by i Brackenridge. Victoria, 28; Palmer-, ston, 17. Bunting drew a magnificent j shot in the following head, when Victoria was lying a hat full, and in the j other rink Victoria was lying five when ! the skips went down. Brackenridge ' drew another, and Mowlem drove and

missed, but, drawing with his second, saved four. Victoria. 30: Palmerston, 18. Mack scored another for Victoria with a splendid shot, which Gooder , kept, and in the other rink there was a | similar result. Victoria. 32; Palmer- , ston. 18. Mack was again scoring two for Victoria, and these Bunting failed Ito shift. In Mowlem’s rink Buick was lying the shot for Palmerston when the younger Brackenridge drove it off, the result being a dead head. Victoria, 34; Palmerston, 18. In the aggregate ’ there were now fifteen heads to go, and j the game was still open. Gooder failed 1 with a firm draw to pick Bunting off, and Palmerston scored one. By a fine shot. Nash also scored for Palmerston in Mowlem’s rink, and the score stood: I Victoria, 34; Palmerston, 20. Palmer- ! ston, in Bunting’s rink, put up another • three in an interesting head, and in ; Mowlem’s rink, when the skips went j down, Buick and Nash were scoring for ' Palmerston. A drive by Brackenridge j failed to alter the head. Palmerston,

1 25; Victoria, 34. Gooder put, on two ] for Victoria in the next head, and, | drawing beautifully in the eighteenth 1 head, saved five. Mowlem, however, j put on two in his rink, and the score stood: Palmerston. 27; Victoria, 37. i Victoria was gradually increasing its j lead in Gooder’s rink, where he held a j lead at the close of the nineteenth head jof ten points. Mowlem drew in a fine j shot in the seventeenth head in his j rink, and the score stood: Palmerston, j 16; Victoria, 17. Aggregate score: Pal- ! merston, 28; Victoria. 39. With six j heads to play, it was decided, owing to j the failing light, to postpone the close 1 of the match till this morning. ■ j It may be noted that Palmerston was not playing with its recognised skip in Bunting’s rink. This militated against

its success somewhat, although it was generally allowed that Mr Bunting played a good game. FIFTEENTH ROUND. WELLINGTON GREEN. Mount Eden v. Petone.—Mount Eden —Ross, 24; Petone —Austin, 11.
