Mr Fred Hardy, secretary of the N.Z. Axemen’s Association and Eltham Athletic Club, was recently on a visit to Auckland, and informed “Lynx” that C. Hutton, who won the one-mile handicap at Feilding from 90yds in 4min 27 l-ssec, is a novice on the running track, but figured prominently among the competitors at the axemen’s carnival last year. He found that he could run over distances in Tasmania, where lie turned out with a well-known distance runner when the latter was training. L. B. Webster, W. H. Pollock and S. J. Parker were engaged in the amateur events at the Wanganui Caledonian Society’s meeting this week. Their :e----spective starts were:—loo yards: Webster, 2yds behind scr; Pollock, scr; Parker, lyd. 220 yards: Pollock and Webster, 4yds; Parker, 11yds. 440 yards: Pollock and Webster, 3yds; Parker, 13 yds.

The amateur running races on the Christchurch St. Patrick’s Day Sports Association programme include a mile handicap, in which F. W. Simpson will be asked to make an attempt to lower the Australasian record for that instance.

I understand that at the next meeting of the N.Z.A.A.A. the question of sending Geo. Smith and F. W. Simpson to England to compete will be hiougit up. I presume all affiliated clubs, and members where the clubs arc not in a. position to grant a bonus, will be asked to contribute. Subscription lists placed in the Sports Club at Auckland and the several athletic club rooms at Christchurch, would no doubt result in a large sum being subscribed towards the project.

The Mangaweka Athletic Club lias among its officials an honorary solicitor, which position is filled by Mr T. P. Finn.

At a meeting of the directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, the question of holding the championship meeting was discussed. Mr Heron thought that the time had arrived when the championship meeting be Held in Masterton. They were now in funds. He moved that application be made to the N.Z. Association that the championship meeting be hold in Masterton next New Year’s Day. Mr Smith seconded tho motion, and in doing so, suggested that a committee be appointed to canvas the business people of the town for assistance. Mr Hill strongly supported the resolution, urging that the next meeting should be held there during the next year or two. 'The motion was put and carried unanimously. I understand tho Wanganui Caledonian Society intone.s to apply fo r the next championship meeting.

, The Blenheim Hibernian Society will iold their annual sports as usual on St. atricks Ray. Mr Shannon will again make the handicaps. A(, the Tariki Caledonian Society's sports on February 28th there is a three distance handicap (100, 220 and 440yds) are£5 y £9 n ?n r /wi een yfiars ' The prizes v 10s (botb Presented by Mr C. McMaster) and £l.

Acting on my recommendation, the committee'of the Hibernian sports abandoned the idea of holding a meeting at the Basin Reserve on St. Patrick’s Day. A picnic will be held probably at Father Lane’s grounds at the Hutt. L. C. McLachlan took part in a gala at New Brighton on Thursday last. Conceding 11yds in 75yds and 12yds m 100yds, he was unplaced in both events. He won the 220 event easily, conceding starts up to 19yds.
