In the old days considerably over 80 per cent, of the shipping that entered the port of Bangkok was under the British flag. At the present day Germany has the lead. Of the 440 steamers that clear, ed inwards at Bangkok in 1900 , 44 per cent, were under the German flag, and 38 per cent, under the British; 49 per cent, of the steam tonnage was German, and 37 per cent. British; 58 per cent, of the total value of cargoes from foreign countries came by German vessels, and 34 per cent, by British.
