In the old days considerably over 80 per cent, of the shipping that entered the port of Bangkok was under the British flag. At the present day Germany has the lead. Of the 440 steamers that clear, ed inwards at Bangkok in 1900 , 44 per cent, were under the German flag, and 38 per cent, under the British; 49 per cent, of the steam tonnage was German, and 37 per cent. British; 58 per cent, of the total value of cargoes from foreign countries came by German vessels, and 34 per cent, by British. The French flag, with 26 steamers, came,,third in regard to the number, fourth in tonnage, and sixth in value of cargo imported from foreign countries, the Norwegian, Dutch and Siamese flags being all considerably ahead of it in this last respect. Of the cargoes carried outwards to foreign countries, saya the '‘Bangkok Times,” 54 per cent, went in German bottoms and 34 in British. The Corporation of Lichfield has at last become possessed of the house in which Dr Johnson was born—thanks largely to the munificence of one of the citizens, Mr Alderman Gilbert. An ocean race was won by an English sailing barque, Muskoka, which covered the 18,000 rautical miles from Astoria, with a cargo of 3500 tons of wheat, in 101 davs. on one occasion traversing 332 mile# in the 24 hours.
