RACING IN AUSTRALIA

V.B.C. AUTUMN MEETING. MELBOURNE, March 2. The A’ictoria Racing Club’s autumn meeting opened at Flemington to-day. The weather was very hot, and the sun shone with great power. There was a strong north wind, which was as scorching as if it came from a furnace. Some diminution in the attendance was noticeable. The Lieutenant-Governor not being in very good health, and being at Macedon, no Government House party attended. As some cementing had been newly done, the promenade from the stand for a space was railed off. The stand was reached by occasional gangways, which were not so comfortable as the usual means of access. Not much change was made in the favouritism for the Newmarket Handicap. A rumour of lameness lengthened Advance’s price, but when it was denied there was a recovery. The Watch Dog was knocked about, but the stable supported him. Wakeful was kept well up.
