Dreamland, the winner of the Australian Cup, Avas bred at St. Albans by the late Mr W. R. Wilson in 1891, and is consequently rising nine years of age. As a yearling he realised top price at the St. Albans sale, being purchased by Mr R. Orr for 625 guineas. He won his purchase money on the first occasion that he sported silk, in the Maribyr.nong Plate (worth 1000 sovs), in Avhich he raced in the nomination of Messrs Bailey and Orr, and beat a field of sixteen. This was the only occasion on Avhich he Avas raced as a tAvo-year-old. Dreamland Avas a strong winter favourite for the Victoria Derby. He opened his three-3 7 ear-old career in the Caulfield Guineas, for which event he started favourite, but could only get third to Cobbitty. At Flemington he Avent out a strong favourite for the Derby, hut once more let his supporters cloAvh, finishing unplaced behind The Harvester. He started at any price in the Melbourne Cup, won by Patron, and finished in the ruck. Before the conclusion of the meeting he shoAved that he could gallop by running second to Fortunatus in the Royal Park Stakes, but ran like a duffer in the Spring Stakes, Avhen meeting horses his own age. As a four-year-old, Dreamland ran unplaced to Hova in the Melbourne Stakes and Auraria in the Melbourne Cup. In the autumn he started at a short price for the Australian Cup, Avon by Idolator, and finished fifth. Messrs Bailey and Orr stuck to their handsome and expensive colt, and the following spring saAv him again contesting the Melbourne Cup. He occupied about eleventh place behind Newhaven. He was next brought out at the Grand National meeting, where he shaped like a commoner in a flat race. As a seven-year-old, Dreamland, 7st 71b, ran a dead heat with La Carabine, 7st 91b, in the August Handicap, one mile and a half, and heat the St. Albans mare in the run off. He got into the Melbourne Cup with the light impost of 7st 21b, and Avas one of the last to finish behind The Grafter. His - first appearance in Sir Rupert Clarke's colours was in He Adelaide Cup. He has since been in retirement, and his success reflects great credit on James Scobie, the Ballarat trainer, for haAdng persevered with him so long. This stable, of which Sir Rupert Clarke, Messrs R. Orr and F. T. Forrest are the principal patrons, has been well nigh in- r vincible during the past year, and has been qu,ite as successful in proportion to the number of horses raced as were the late Hon Jas. White and the late Mr W. R. Wilson in their best daysT’ Like the Newmarket Handicap winner (Wakeful), Dreamland is by \ the ful Musket sire Trenton, now in England. Both Avinners were bred bv the late squire of St. Albans, and are nearly full-blooded relations. Insomnia (dam of Wakeful) is by Robinson Crusoe—Nightmare (dam of Dreamland),, full sister to Commotion. Insomnia is . sister to La Tosca, who did good service in the St. Albans colours, while Dreamland is brother to Slumber. ,■ The Cup winner was one of the first batch of the. Trentons. Although, Paul Pry is not at present so: serviceable! as he was last autumn, Scobie’S stable shelters the? champion twoi-year-old United States (another example of . the successful St. . Si men—Musket nick) ; the best three-year-olds in Clean Sweep and Maltster ; La .Carabine, :; who can hold. her. j -own with the aged division; and such handi-. , cap performers as The Bride and Dream.-

land. With the exception of Maltster and Paul Pry, the whole of the horses mentioned are descendants of the stout Musket family. Flintlock, Avho acted as runner-up to Dreamland, is a grey brother to Amberite, Avho has been making a name for himself as a Carbine, out in the West. He is rising seven years of age, and also belongs to the first batch of “old Jack’s” stock. ACCEPTANCES. GISBORNE, March 5.
