MARRIAGE AND POLITICS.
When the Princess of the Asturias was betrothed to the sen of the Count of Caserta, the subject was discussed in the Spanish Chamber of Deputies. Se~ nor Romero y Robledo said he did not wish to be wanting in the respect duo to high personages, but the Royal family personified the country, and- the marriage of a Princess of the blood did not therefore interest the Royal family alone, but was of a .political character, and the Chamber had a right to discuss the question. In his opinion the marriage should be postponed until the King was of age, in order that his Majesty might give his decision. Senor Romero said that the Queen Regent was hostile to this marriage with the son of the Count of Caserta, as it might prejudice the relations of Spain with Italy. After attacking the Ministers for the mannetr in which the young King was being educated, Senor Romero concluded by urging all statesmen to oppose the alliance with the utmost vigour, as it was contrary to the interests of the State. That the Spanish people also objected to the marriage of their Princess to a member of the Neapolitan House was evident from thq disturbances which ocurred at the time of the wedding.
