The weekly meeting of the City Council Avas held on the 28th. Present— The Mayor (Mr J. G, W. Aitken), Councillors Barber, Winder, Izard, Smith, Murdoch, Anderson, Willeston, Evans, To!hurst and Luke.

The- Works Committee’s report as fol--loa was read: —That the petitioners for asphalting a private right-of-way off Moir street be informed that the Council has no power to do anything in the matter ; that the application of Mr J. Fitchett for leave to take off the part of his house which, encroaches on Ohiro road up to the joists of the upper floor only be refused; that a drain be laid 1 through Mr A. J. Swanson’s property, Sydney street, to seiwe other houses in the locality; that Mr T. King be informed that the Council is unable to take any further action in regard to the watercourse at Ellice street; that the Karori Borough Council be informed that the subsidy towards the maintenance of the Karori road at ill be paid over as soon as the whole of the road) has been put into proper repair; that the request of Mr T. H. Donovan for leave to advertise on the fence around the Town. Hall site be declined; that

nr J. Ogden be allowed the use of the section of land belonging to the Corporation at Kilbirnie for £3 per annum, subject to three months’ notice of termination at any time; that tenders be invited for the supply of Avater-pipes and fittings,- about- sixty tons; that action, as recommended by the CityEngineer, be taken against the parties Avlio have caused a subsidence in the footpath at' Wellington terrace. On the motion of Councillor Luke, the petition Avith respect to, asphalting a private right-of-way off ivioir street Avas referred back to the committee Aidth a view to ascertaining whether the residents Avould pay part of the cost. The remainder of the report Avas adopted. Councillor Tolhurst moved—(l) That, in view of there being no native owners now entitled to the New - Zealand Company’s tenths in the city of Wellington, this Council petition the General Assembly to have these reserves vested in the Council for recreation purposes, in lieiu * cf A r arious reserves taken from the Town Belt in the past; and, (2) that, in A r iew of the fact that- the trust of the "Wellington College site is no longer observed, the Council petition the General Assembly to re-vest this land: in the Council for recreation purposes. The Mayor ruled that as the subject of Clause 2 of the" motion Avas before the Court, it was out of order. Councillor Tolhurst, addressing himself to the first part of the motion, explained the original position of the ciiy reserves. There were 381 acres belonging to Wellington natures, who had all died, and the revenue from the lease of that land A\ T as being devoted to other purposes. In view .of the fact that Wellington had been despoiled of a. large portion of its reserves, lie thought that Parliament should vest the area in th© city for recreation purposes.' Councillor Smith seconded the motion, and complimented Councillor Tolhurst on bringing it forward. ' _ Councillors Luke, Anderson and Winder supported the motion, which at as carried, and referred to the Legislative Committee. The Council went into committee to consider tenders. On resuming, it aa as reported that the tender of Messrs McGrath and Burke had been accepted for the erection of the T’e Aro baths, the erection of a sea wall, and the widening of the roadAvay at Clyde quay. The amount of the. tender was not disclosed. The tender of Mr Janies Cook AA r as accepted by the Council for section 24 of block 3, Te Aro. A Avarehouse is to be erected on the section.
