MELBOURNE RACING NOTES. FLEMINGTON, February 26. Yesterday Advance and Boreas covered five furlongs in Imin 4fsec. This morning The Bride beat Dreamland over two miles in 3min Advance and Boreas ran half a mile in 50£sec, Barbarossa ten furlongs in 2min 24sec, Fulminate five furlongs in Imin 54sec, Marie Corelli three furlongs in 38|sec, and Finland twelve furlongs in 2min 45sec. La Carabine and Clean Sweep covered eight furlongs in Imin 45sec. Ferryman went five furlongs in Imin ssec, Songbird six furlongs in Imin 20sec, and Flintlock ten furlongs in 2mm 20sec. Maltster and Paul Pry rauuhalf a mile in 54£sec, and Fortune Teller five furlongs in Imin 4£sec. Betting: —Newmarket Handicap—7 to 2 against Wakeful, 8 to 1 Advance, 10 to 1 each Watch Dog and Fulminate, 10 to 1 Maltster, 20 to 1 each Man of Honour, Marie Corelli and Songbird. Wakeful was backed for £SOOO.
Maltster is favourite for the Australian Cup at 5 to 1. MiLLiiOURNE, February 26.
Man of Honour covered six furlongs in Imin 18sec. Royal Purple and Seaport were not given their heads, and did slow work. Cicero, Gungadin and Idler did one mile and a quarter in 2min 19see. Lancaster went one mile and a half, and did the last mile and a quarter in 2min 14sec, and the last mile with Sagacity in Imin 46sec. So Long bent Roscommon over six furlongs in Imin 46sec. Town Clock did six-furlongs in Imin 24see. Australian and First Mate, hard held, covered nine furlongs in Imin 55 £ sec. The betting market is dull. Prices— Wakeful, 3to 1; Advance, 7to 1; Watch Dog, 8 to 1; Fulminate, 10 to 1. ADVANCE AND FULMINATE. SYDNEY, February 26. The “Daily Telegraph" warns speculators who are pinning their faith and money on the New Zealand 1 crack Advance and on the Sydney flyer Fulminate for the Newmarket Handicap, that a new record in the matter of weight will have to be established for either horse to win, Advance carrying 9st- 111 b and Fulminate 9st 101 b. Allowing for her sex, the latter is really conceding weight to the much-discu.ssed visitor.
