In an official report to the Sydney Water and Sewerage Board, Mr Mailier Kendall reported that there had been during the past year an alarming increase in the number of cases of typhoid in the metropolitan area, and many cases had occurred in localities hitherto considered to he very free from that disease. The death occurred in Queensland a fe\v days ago of Mr Arthur Woodward, Government storekeeper. Mr Woodward was a native of Kidderminster, Worcestershire, and came to New Zealand in 1861. He only remained here two years, when he went to Sydney, and in 1868 started in business as a merchant in Brisbane. He first entered the Government service in 1884 as inspector of Pacific Islanders, and became colonial in 1890. In 1870, 80 wnorcls a minute was the record over our telegraph-wire. Six hundred are easily sent to-day. In 1801, 1,570.000 newspapers were issued monthly. This has grown to over 41,000,000 a day.
