SIR GEORGE O’BRIEN’S SPEECH
The “Mercantile Guardian” of Ilonclon in an article dealing with Sir G. O’Brien’s speech at the Waimbokasi Hospital, observes: —There is trouble between Fiji and New Zealand. There are insults ■ which nothing but blood canwipe out. if we except an apology. Sir George O’Brien, the Governor of Fiji, has put his foot into it with a vengeance. He has -wounded every tender feeling possessed by New Zealanders.; he has wantonly libelled them and stamped on their honour. Is it any wonder, then, that there are wigs' on the green at Wellington? Sir ‘George O’Brien has condemned in strong language federation with New Zealand. He stated that the New Zealanders. - Had robbed the Maoris of their lands, and t ere desirous of obtaining Fiji lands. Such a recklessly inflammatory speech coming from the merest civilian would he condemned by al sensible and rightminded men. Coming from the Governor of a colony it is absolutely disgraceful, and it is to be hoped that Mr Chamberlain will give Sir George O'Brien a severe rap over the knuckles, if he does not recall him-—a .punishment his offence richly deserves.
