The sugar mills at Fiji having stopped crushing, says the correspondent of the “Sydney Morning Herald/ - ’ shipping has been dull. The regular steamers have arrived and sailed with fair cargoes. It is satisfactory to note that the total trade for the year 1900 nearly totalled! 1,000,0001 b, this being the record for Fiji. Word has beein received that the Brit-ish-India Steam Navigation. Company has been successful in tendering for the conveyance of 2400 coolies from Calcutta to Fiji. Three steamers will be employed, the first leaving Calcutta on the 20th instant. Much interest is being evinced in the change of ownership of thel Canadian-Austraiian line. It is felt, the Union S.S. Company of New Zealand having taken a half-share and the full control, that Suva will probably he a port of call again. Altogether, the outlook for 1901 is bright and hopeful. It is stated by a Press Association message from Dunedin that intimation has been received that John Alexander Hay has passed the second section of the B.A. examination, and has also been awarded the John Tinline scholarship for excellence in English language and literature. : An attempt is to be made in Nottingham to counteract the allurements of the tavern by the establishment of “temperance public-houses/' . . ... .
