The following remarks made by the “Taranaki Herald ” are typical of the present attitude of a great many provincial newspapers:—“That, noble patriotism which caused the colony to send men to South Africa and to find the money to equip them is in danger of degenerating into a spurious kind of patriotism, to be used by some who make the loudest professions as a means of gaining a cheap popularity, and thus becoming ridiculous in the sight of the nations. Besides, the distraction from ordinary pursuits is becoming serious. For the last sixteen months this colony has been in a constant ferment from one cause and another, and the c nd of the excitement is not yet. in sight. Seriously, it. is almost time we settled down again into the steady, sober* peace-loving people that we are.”
