A circular letter from the Department of Public Health was read at the Hospital Trustees’ meeting on the 12th. It was headed “Hospitals for Chronic Oases,” and pointed out that there were a number of incurable cases unsuitable for treatment in the general hospitals of the colony. The great majority of the patients on leaving the hospitals became recipients of help from Charitable Aid Boards. The cost to the State was thus greater than it would be if such unfortunates were properly housed, while in many cases the patients are almost neglected. The Hon Mr Ward (Minister of Health), it was stated, was desirous of obtaining some idea of the number in the colony. The Trustees were therefore asked to get an enclosed form filled up showing the number of incurable cases at present in their district-. The secretary was instructed by the Trustees to supply the information asked for.
