INDIGNANT COUNCILLORS.

The customary set-to between Councillor Fullford and his fellow-councillors took place at last week’s meeting of the Melrose Borough Council. Councillor Walter having moved that three additional councillors —whom he specified—be added to the Tramway Committee, Councillor Fullford moved by way of amendment that the members of Island Bay and Ohiro Wards be appointed a committee. Councillor Walter thereupon remarked’ that he would include Councillor Fullford’s name in his motion if that Councilor greatly wished to be on the committee. Councillor Fullford retorted that Councillor Walter had! not been a regular attendant at Tramway Committee meetings. He had absented himself from the last one. Councillor Walter was at once on his feet with a motion that Councillor Fullford be < ensured. He (Councillor Walter) had not received notice* of the meeting. Councillor Highet seconded the censure motion. A long and heated discussion ensued. Councillor Nicol said he would like to see the motion withdrawn, but he thought Councillor Fullford had brought the Council into disgrace by his recent conduct. Councillor Keene lamented the lack of respect for the chair which had been exhibited by the Councillor named in the motion, but still, he would prefer to see the matter dropped.

Councillor Highet objected, to the motion being withdrawn, unless Councillor Fullford withdrew his insinuation. Councillor Brown asked the clerk if he had posted a notice to Councillor Walter rc the meeting, and the clerk replied affirmatively. The Mayor said he thought the motion of censure should be withdrawn, as ho believed the purpose had been served in warning Councillor Fullford that he had no right to set at naught the authority of the chair. For some time past attempts had been made by' Councillor Fullford to rule the Council, but he (the Mayor) thought it had been made sufficiently clear to that gentleman that he could not further set authority at naught. Councillor Fullford desired to say that he was not aware Councillor Walter had not received notice—.

Councillor Jorgensen: You heard him say so last meeting!

Councillor Fullford: Under the circumstances I withdraw my remarks about his having failed in his duty to his burgesses. After the Mayor had several times explained to Councillor Highet that Councillor Fullford had withdrawn his statement, the latter acquiesced in Councillor Walter’s withdrawal of the censure motion, and, peace was once more restored.
