In reply to a communication from the Chief Surveyor, it was specified by the Council that the road formation through the property recently acquired from Mr S. Ma-on should he a chain wide, less 9ft on eaeu side for footpaths; that- the road be m failed! for 33ft, 9in deep m centre and 6in deep at- the edges. It was resolved tc co-operate with the Health ..Officer in carrying out the provisions of the Health ;lct of 1900. The Assistant Surveyor-General forwarded agreements ir. respect of the following grants in aid:—Akatarawa bridge, £200; Porirua bridge, £100; Mungaroa bridge (YVhiteman’s Ford), £100; Southee’s road, £100; Wainui Stream bridge, £100; Para Valley (Mangakotukutuku), £250; AkatarawaWaikanae, £4OO. The offers were accepted with thanks. In response to an inquiry from the Valuer-General, the secretary was instructed to reply that the Council’s rates would be levied in April if the rolls were returned by then; and in reply to the Charitable Aid Board it was decided to answer that a sum of £350 was the estimated amount required for charitable aid during the year. A petition was received from Mr John Plimmer and twenty-three others asking the Council to reduce the general rate over the Plimmerton Road District from fd to 4d- A long discussion ensued, and it was eventually decided that the petition could not be given effect t-o. Mr J. Field was granted permission to erect- a plain wire fence on Tongariro street to protect a live fence planted by him. The general manager of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company wrote stating that his company would construct a public crossing at the iron gate close to the Wainui station for the sum of £9O, subject to; the Council paying the wages of a gate-keeper if, found necessary at any future time.—The matter was held over for consideration. Councillor Davies moved that tenders be called for eighty-seven chains of metalling on the main road ' between Paraparaumu road and Waikanae, about sixty-seven chains being between Mangakotukntuku river and Waikanae, and about twenty chains between Mangakotukutuku and Otaihanga. The road, he said, was in a bad state now, and it would become absolutely impassable in winter unless it was seen to. Councillor George Brown said there was a chance of the Minister of Lands making a grant in aid of the work shortly, and it was eventually decided to call for tenders for the work subject- to the grant being made. It was resolved to add 10 per cent, to all rates for the current year not paid by the Ist March. It- was decided to call for tenders for the erection of a bridge to Gear Island, provided rights of access be given by prop erty-o wners concerned. A tender was opened for repairs to* Rocky Point and Valley road, but the question of acceptance was held over. It was resolved to inform Mr Wills of the amount of the tender, and to state to him the Council’s willingness to pay £25 toward the cost if he would provide the balance required. The tender of Mr Aplin was accepted for the forming of eighty chains of road at Mangakotukutuku. Councillor Davies moved, “ That the Council take steps to erect a bridge across the Waikanae river at Rikiorangi in conjunction with- the Horowhenua Council, and: that a grant of £2OO made to the Council by Government be expended thereupon.” The motion was seconded by Councillor Cook, and carried. Accounts totalling £613 17s 9d were passed for payment.
