NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE.

LACKING IN AUSTRALIA

THE PREMIER SUGGESTS A REMEDY.

If will be remembered that in the course of an interview in Australia recently the Premier made pointed allusion to the fact that very little New Zealand news usually appeared in the Australian papers, and expressed the: satisfaction that such should be the case.

Asked by a "Times” reporter if he had made any inquiries relative to the suhject, Mr Seddon said he had. As a result, he had discovered that the proprietors of the Australian papers got as much news as they wanted—that is to say they got just as much as they were prepared to pay wire charges for. It was net the fault of the people at this and who were sending; it was the fault of the people at the other end who were receiving. “The remedy for that,” said Mr Seddon, “will be to arrange for press cables to go over at the same rates as ordinary land telegrams.” . “For the purpose of advertising this colony H” queried the reporter. “If thd several colonies will reciprocate,” replied Mr Seddon, “it will tend to lessen the gap which exists between the colonies, and might ultimatelv lead to a federal cable being established as between New 'Zealand and Australia.”
