A Wellingtm syndicate is said to be negotiating for the purchase of a twelveknot, hundred-ton steamer, capable of accommodating 200 passengers, for a. cheap 1 ferry service between Wellington and Worser and Evans Bays. Cucumbers are native to the East Indies, and are grown in Cashmere, China and Persia, They are common in Bgvpt, where a drink is prepared from them when they are ripe. A new sea-torch of American invention was successfully tried in the Thames. . It consists of a hallow metal tube containing certain chemicals which throw out a brilliant flame cn the tube being launched into the water. The tube, it is said, can be fired as a shell.
