A circular has been received by Mr George Fisher, Italian Consul, from the Minister of Foreign Affairs at Rome, granting an amnesty to all Italians residing in foreign, countries who were born between the years 1860 to 1879 inclusive, but who have not returned to Italy to perform their, military service. The omission to return to Italy at the age of twenty-one to perform, the prescribed military service, is punishable as a criminal offence, should a person born in any of the years indicated be found on Italian soil, the term of imprisonment being two years..; . Italians are informed that they must oomply with the Naval and Military Regulations specified in the circular, a copy of which, for convenience, ,has been posted in the rooms of the Garibaldi Club, Gliuznee street.-
Mr J. Mackay, president of the Wei-, lingten Friendly Societies’ Council, htS received a letter from the Hon C. HillTrevor on behalf of the Governor asking him to convey to the United Friendly Societies of Wellington his Excellency’s thanks for their very kind letter .of sympathy on the occasion of the lamented death of her Majesty the Queen ; and also giving assurance that his Excellency would duly transmit the message to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
