POSTAL STATISTICS.

INCREASE IN LETTERS POSTED. A--return, prepared by the Post and Telegraph Department of letters posted in New Zealand from the 7th to the 13th January, 1901, shows an increase of 30 per cent, in comparison with the figures for the corresponding week of 1900, a result largely due to the inauguration by the colony at the beginning of the present year of a universal penny postage system. The number of ordinary letters post ed in the different districts in the week specified was as follows, the figures for the corresponding period of 1900 being given in parentheses : Auckland, 126,753 (96,667), 30 per cent, increase. - • Blenheim, 8176 (6982), 16 per cent, increitse.
