RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

The summer meeting of the Metropolitan CxUb, postponed from the previous day, was continued on I rt daj. The attendance showed a marked tailing off compared with the holiday, only about 2000 people being present. The weather was cold, but fine until -die last race was being run. wneu ram set in and continued steadily. Passengers by rail had to put up with the inconvenience of waiting on the bridges some time while the first train load was spatchedSirius (owned by Mr Geo. Hunter, of Hawke’s Bay) effected a surprise m the January Handicap. He was the biggest outsider of the nine runners, and paid £l9 3s. The Taranaki-owned Cora Linn (ridden by the Porirua horseman Jenkins) received most support in the Electric Handicap, and won with little to spare from Full Cry, who put in a smart run at the finish. The Cnp winner was backed down to less than level money m the Racing Club Handicap, for which nine started. The heavy going may have settled him. He never got nearer the front than third. After Materoa and Palaver had made the pace solid for over a mile. Boreas came away and won easily.. He paid the good dividend of £9 « 10s. This was Jenkins’* second win during the day. The Juvenile Handicap produced a good contest between the Riccart on-trained Cruciform, who had the best of the weights, and Rere. The latter had again to be content with second place. Thirteen horses contested the Welter Handicap, and half the number finished together. First Blood, who got the judge’s verdict, paid the good price of £22 15s. Mr Stead’s two-year-olds filled first and second places in the Wellesly Stakes. An accident happened to Indian Queen when finishing up tne straight. A dog walked out from the rails, and getting between her legs, the filly turned a somersault. Artiiur Neale (Indian Queen’s jockev) received a severe shaking, but no bones were broken. Formosan was made favourite for the MetroDolitan Handicap, but played up at the start and got left at the post. Magnificent also bolted twice previous to the start. In the race after going about a furlong he bumped the rails and fell. Jones (the Yahihurst light weight), who was riding Mr Harris’s gelding, received a scalp wound. Mr Piper had some had tempered horses to deal with. St. Denis was left at the post in the Electric Handicap, and Paladin in the Racing Club Handicap. Neither hors took any part in the races they were engaged in. Gipsy Jack was withdrawn from the Hack Race on account of the accident to Jones, who was engaged to ride him. The two top weights, Dartmoor and Ngatihuia were best backed. The latter just won from Waterfall, who was paying a good dividend.

During the day the sum of £10.437 was put through' the totalisator, which amount is £4342 less than the second day of last year’s meeting. Following are details of the racing:

When he let them go Paladin turned round and took no part in the race. Passing the stand Battleaxe, Palaver and Renown were m the lead, Skobeloff and Kahnwai, who was left half a dozen lengths, being last. Racing along under the hill. Ostiak, Okoari, Blazer and Magnificent were in the lead for a furlong, when the latter fell. At the four-furlong post Blazer was alongside of Ostiak. Rounding the bend, the leaders were joined by Pnooka. Bounding the bend, Waterford. and Ngaffcibuia Joined the leaders. Artisan and Dew-drop fell hack beaten heiore turning into the straight. Dartmoor was challenged by Waterford, but lasted long enough to win by a head, Ngatihuia twd lengths away, third, Ngaio fourth. Tifno, lmin 46sec. Dividend, £3 4s.

The summer meeting of the Metropolitan Club was brought to a conclusion oti Saturday in wintry weather. Heavy showers of sleet and hail fell throughout the day. The course was in a sloppy state, and alter each race the jockeys returned to the paddock covered with mud. There were no delays or playingup at the- ; post. Mr Piper managed to get the races: off between the showers, with a. scamper . back to the saddling paddock before the next downpour came. Under, the. circumstances,, the enjoyment attached to .a sixmjner outdoor gathering was entirely absent. The attendance numbered about 1000, including a fair proportion of females. Mr Fred Watson, of New Plymouth, scored with Qkoari in the Summer Handicap. Had Full Cry got away on even terms he would most likely have won, Ngatihuia scored an easy win in the Hack Welter Handicap. The victory of the Hon J. D. > Ormond’s Ideal in the Port Nicholson Handicap was proclaimed, but Paladin, whoso rider showed superior horsemanship, got up on the rails, and secured the judge’s verdict. -Melwood, was the only three-year-old in' the Fitzherbert Handicap, and he accounted for his juvenile opponents in an _ easy manner. . Proposal, who ran well in the Port Nicholson Handicap, was also prominent in the Pen. oarrow Welter, and was only overtaken by Cadet in the last fifty yards. The Erst contest for the Zeaiahdia Plate was a, farcical exhibition between two horses belonging to one stable. Had Advance been started, Mr Douglas Gordon would have . also got the lOsovs third money. Boreas and Tortulla had raced earlier in the day. Had Advance walked over the club would have saved £lls. Bulmsh' received, most support in the Hack Disposal, but ran last-. The Napier-owned Ncrine was. successful, and was sold to a Christchurch racing man. Had St. Denis commenced smarter in the Federa-l Handicap he would probably have credited Mr W. Crossan with a well-deserved win. Full Cry had previously run two seconds at the meeting. and is a smart gelding. The sum of £7003 whs ’put through the totnlisator during the day, making a total of £34,183 for the three days. This amount is £4440 more than that handled! last year, which was a two-days’ meeting. Following are details of the racing :• • ' f ‘ - - •,.
